Story behind the NETFLIX

Netflix, collectively Netflix, Inc., a video rental and media streaming company founded in 1997 by American entrepreneurs Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph. It  also participates in the creation of original programs. The company's headquarters are in Los Gatos, California.

In 1999, Netflix began offering an online subscription service over the Internet. Subscribers chose movie and TV titles from  the Netflix website; The shows were then mailed to customers on DVD along with postage-paid return envelopes from one of more than 100 distribution centers. Although customers typically rented as many movies as they wanted per month for a flat monthly fee, their  subscription plans limited the number of DVDs they could own at  one time. Netflix had tens of thousands of movie titles in its catalog. .   In 2006, Netflix launched the $1 million Netflix Awards competition to see if someone could improve their recommendation system, an algorithm used to predict a person's movie preferences based on past rental dates, by 10 percent.Three years later, the award went to BellKors Pragmatic Chaos, a team  of seven mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers from the United States, Canada, Austria, and Israel.

In 2007, Netflix began offering its subscribers the option to stream some of its movies and TV shows directly to their homes over the Internet. With most subscriptions, the streaming service was unlimited. Netflix later partnered with manufacturers of various consumer electronics, including video game consoles and Blu-ray Disc players,  to allow their videos to be streamed to these devices via an internet connection. In 2010, Netflix introduced a streaming-only plan, , which offered unlimited streaming service but no DVDs. Netflix then expanded beyond the United States by offering the streaming-only plan in Canada in 2010,  Latin America and the Caribbean in 2011, and  the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia in 2012.As of 2016, its streaming service was available in more than 190 countries and territories.

Netflix had announced in September 2011 that it would split its streaming and email services,  the latter of which would be called Qwikster, but  abandoned the proposed split a month later, citing an outcry from its subscribers. While the streaming services became the biggest revenue generator with over 200 million subscribers by 2021, the rental division remained profitable.   Beginning in 2013 with the episodic drama series House of Cards, the company offered video content produced specifically for its streaming service. Such content became a major focus for Netflix, with more than 2,400 original titles offered by the end of 2021.His notable series have included Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Stranger Things, Narcos, The Crown, Bridgerton, and Squid Game. He also produced numerous films, most notably Roma (2018), which won three Oscars including Best Foreign Language Film .
