To whom does Buddhism belong?

There are many myths about Buddhism. Even those who are famous as eloquent preachers do not seem to know about this. That is why those who say that Buddhism is only for Buddhists. There is also a fear of Buddhism among the common people. They fear that it will be inappropriate for secular life to hinder the progress of Buddhism. Therefore, I wanted to write this to tell the truth about the present day Sri Lankan society which has such attitudes towards Buddhism.

Dhamma is Dharma. We call it 'Buddhism' because it is a Dharma that the Buddha himself understood and preached for the healing of the minds of the creatures of the world.

Buddhism teaches the doctrine of the universe. That is the Dharma which reveals the true facts about the universe. Therefore it can also be called the universal doctrine. Buddhism teaches the truth about the universe. Therefore, this understanding is not available to any animal other than man. Therefore Buddhism a doctrine limited to man. This doctrine helps one to identify who one is.

A large percentage of Sri Lankan people today know only about others. They have no idea who they are. This is the cause of human suffering. Grief is relieved when one recognizes who he is.

Therefore, Buddhism is the Dharmatha preached by the Buddha to man to know who he is and to get rid of sorrow. That is why it is a universal doctrine.
